Clippers Dispatch of Thunder in Straight Sets

By Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers (14-4) wrapped up their 2023-24 regular season in men's volleyball with a cross-division match against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder (2-16). The Clippers ably defended their home court with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-19 victory.

The Clippers' TJ Ward made his formidable blocking presence known right off the hop, while Judah Matthies brought a potent service game. Marc Revet and Kai Rosnau, lefty setters for Briercrest and Concordia respectively, surprised on offense with kills. With his team in control, Revet found Ward in the middle on multiple occasions, and the big man did not disappoint.

Coleman and Tanner Bean opened the second set for the home team with an emphatic block of Thunder middle Logan Kranrod. The Clipper tandem continued to do damage, with Coleman blasting down the line and Bean delivering a steady diet of baffling serves. Rosnau enjoyed success when attacking chances presented themselves, but his mates struggled to find a groove and they surrendered the frame.

Revet connected with all his hitters early in set three before stuffing Kranrod in a one-on-one contest, but seconds later the Thunder middle rejected Bean. The Concordia team steeled themselves and evened the score, aided by miscues from the Clippers. However, Revet got the better of Van Tooke at the net, Ward shone on serve, and Briercrest took the game.

Player of the Game for Concordia was setter Kai Rosnau with three kills, two blocks, nine digs, and 11 assists. Briercrest Athletics held a video tribute to honour and celebrate the careers of graduating players Karym Coleman (10 kills, four digs, two blocks and one ace) and TJ Ward (five kills and two aces). Coleman was also recognized for becoming the ACAC's all-time leader in kills.
