Broncos salvage weekend split with Lions

The Olds College Broncos turned in a gritty performance on home court, defeating the Ambrose University Lions in five sets (25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 14-25, 15-13) at the Ralph Klein Centre to earn a split of the weekend doubleheader between the two sides.

The duo of Matheus Franca and Aidyn Phillips each finished with 17 kills, with Franca also posting 11 digs and Phillips chipping in with four for the Broncos (8-6). Ben Gammel (11 kills) and Strahinja Lazarevic (seven kills, one block, four digs) also played key roles for the Broncos, who maintained a half-game lead over the Lions for fourth in the ACAC South.

On the other side, Nikita Marchenkov led all attackers with 19 kills and 22 points to go with seven digs, while Cole Giesbrecht added 16 points (14 kills, one ace, one block) and 10 digs, and Noah Verhoef and Isaac Karstad each posted 11-point performances, with Karstad also adding 10 digs.

Next up, the Broncos head south for a doubleheader with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, while the Lions will host the Briercrest College Clippers for a pair of matches. Both will hit the court on Friday, January 26 at 8 p.m., and both matches will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
