Kings round up the Rustlers with a four set victory

Red Deer, January 14, 2024 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings start the 2024 calendar year with back-to-back victories after defeating the Lakeland College Rustlers in four sets on Sunday evening.

After a huge solo block by middle Dillon Gauci (Bachelor of Kinesiology), the Kings jump out to a commanding 12-6 lead in the first set. Following a Rustlers attacking error, Lakeland College called the first timeout of the match. From this point on, the Kings took complete control and went on to defeat the Rustlers 25-15, following outside-hitter Noah Carlson's fourth kill of the set.

But the second set was a much different story with the Rustlers matching the Kings kill-for-kill throughout the majority of the set. Following a block on Carlson, Lakeland took a 20-18 lead into an RDP timeout and ultimately would take the second set 25-23 following outside-hitter Gabriel Brinchmann Bjorkas' (University Transfer) fourth kill of the match.

The match continued to stay tight in the third set with both teams not being able to take that all-important two-point lead and they just swapped points right until the Rustlers took a 17-15 lead late in the set. But the next four points went to the Kings who would take a 19-17 lead into Lakeland College's timeout. RDP would take the third set 25-22 after a Rustlers hitter sent the ball out of bounds on the kill attempt.

Like the first set, the Kings came out swinging in the fourth and managed to jump out to an early 9-3 lead with Carlson adding three more kills to his total in this time. The Kings went on cruise control from this point on and would take the match 3-1 with a 25-16 set victory.

The players of the match were awarded to Rustlers Gabriel Brinchmann Bjorkas and Kings Noah Carlson. Bjorkas finished off the match with 12 kills while Carlson had 15 kills. Both of these athletes finished with one block apiece.

RDP will be back in action for two matches at home against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers while the Rustlers will head up north to battle with the Keyano College Huskies. Both matches on Friday will start at 8 pm.

Players of the match: Gabriel Brinchmann Bjorkas (Rustlers) and Noah Carlson (Kings)
