Clippers Conquer Rustlers in Four Set

By Jeff Misener

The north division Lakeland Rustlers brought their spotless record to Caronport to strut their stuff against the Briercrest Clippers, leaders in the south and 2022-23 CCAA bronze medallists. The Clippers keyed off CCAA All-Canadian Karym Coleman in scoring a 25-12, 22-25, 25-22, 25- 15 victory.

Briercrest soared to a quick lead as Adam Revet cashed in on his serve and Jackson Anderson and Judah Matthies delivered darts down the middle. Coleman and Rustlers' Vaughn Zimmer traded hits on the right side. Revet registered a sequence of authoritative blocks before Coleman asserted his dynamic presence. An unblocked middle assault from Revet delighted the fans as Briercrest collected the set.

The Rustlers hit the court with determination and purpose in set two. When the Clippers needed a boost, Coleman delivered the goods, but the Rustlers sustained their plucky play. Lakeland's Keifer Sinclair, Brock Tomyn and Declan Mercer shared the spotlight for the visitors as the Alberta college stole the game.

Clippers' setter Jeremy Martens opened the third frame with a trio of aces. Tomyn and teammate Elijah Rayner capitalized on their opportunities, prompting Revet to step up for the hosts. The Clippers flourished with Bean on serve, but Lakeland had an answer in the play of Tomyn. Key blocks from Martens and Revet on Mercer and Jackson Anderson and Bean on Tomyn shifted the momentum in favour of the hosts, but Lakeland proved resilient on Tomyn's serve. Unfazed, Coleman tooled a block to close the game.

Coleman continued to score points for Briercrest, but Anderson also hand his hand in some impressive attacks. The Lakeland game lacked the sharpness and urgency they had shown earlier, allowing Briercrest to extend their advantage. Briercrest secured the victory as Bean delivered the final kill in the middle.

Karym Coleman assembled a dominant performance for Briercrest with 25 kills, four digs, and two aces, earning him Player of the Game honours. Lakeland setter Keifer Sinclair captured the award for his squad, distributing 22 assists along with five digs, two kills, and a pair of aces.
