Briercrest Men Sweep SAIT

Familiar rivals opened the 2023-24 ACAC men's volleyball schedule as the Briercrest Clippers, the 2022-23 ACAC Champions and CCAA bronze medallists, entertained the SAIT Trojans. The match was preceded with a ceremony to celebrate last year's conference championship for the host Clippers, who were dominant in a 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 triumph.

Briercrest dictated the early tempo as Jackson Anderson and TJ Ward flexed their pipes on the attack and Anderson blasted a plethora of aces. All-Canadian Karym Coleman announced his presence with an array of punishing kills as Briercrest controlled all aspects of the opening set and cruised to a comfortable 25-13 win.

Briercrest held the edge to start set two, but SAIT's outside hitter Gustavo Machado halted the momentum. A massive triple block by the Clippers on Machado, and a solo stuff by Ward on SAIT setter Diem Amuan, electrified the crowd. Clipper setter Jeremy Martens found all his offensive targets with ease, while Amuan and Anderson featured on serve. Ward punished a passing error to finish the second set.

As Parker Bloom powered the hosts to an early lead on serve, the Trojans replied with deep attacks, but they lacked consistency in this strategy. Coleman mashed balls from the service line and the back row, while Briercrest's blockers thwarted SAIT's efforts to create sustained momentum on offense. Veteran setter Martens expertly quarterbacked the Clippers' offense and the hosts sailed to victory in three sets.

Player of the Game for Briercrest was Jackson Anderson, who registered four kills, six digs, and seven aces. SAIT libero Dominic Soucie's scooped up four digs to secure the honour for the visitors.
