The Olds College Broncos and Red Deer Polytechnic Kings played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Richardson Pioneer Field on Sunday.
The draw was all the Kings (4-3-2) needed to punch their ticket to Edmonton for the 2023 ACAC Men's Soccer Championship, while simultaneously eliminating the Broncos (2-4-3) from contention.
Adjin Sarcevic put the Kings up 1-0 with an early breakthrough in the fifth minute, beating Broncos keeper Gabriel Janik to the top left-hand corner. The lead stood through halftime, but the Broncos charged back even in the 52nd minute as Thomson Isreal-Welemongar curled home a free kick to give Olds College a shot, but they were unable to find the extra goal to keep their hopes alive.
Amarthy Lawer was named player of the game for the Broncos, while Adan Sanchez-Pimental picked up the honour for Red Deer Polytechnic.
Both teams will complete their regular seasons against the Ambrose University Lions next weekend, with the Kings heading to Calgary for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, while the Broncos will wrap up their season on home field on Sunday, again with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
