Broncos, Kodiaks battle to 5-5 draw in Olds

In a wild, intense match from start to finish, the Olds College Broncos and Lethbridge College Kodiaks battled to an eventful 5-5 draw at Richardson Pioneer Field in Olds on Saturday.

Jaxon Uhl, Joel McLeod, Brandon Francis, and player of the game Ben Knight scored for the CCAA #14 Kodiaks (4-1-1), while also being aided by a Broncos own goal; Finn McCann made seven saves in the Lethbridge net.

For the Broncos (2-3-2), Thomson Isreal-Welemongar converted a hat trick consisting entirely of penalties while adding an assist; player of the game Michael Authenac and Wilson Ouattara also scored for Olds College, while Cas Blous made four saves between the pipes.

Uhl got the offense rolling for Lethbridge in the 16th minute, heading home a free kick from Knight to put the Kodiaks up 1-0. However, the Broncos would respond in the 40th minute; off a Cameron McNeely corner kick, Authenac converted a bicycle kick from the edge of the 18-yard box to level the score. The Kodiaks would reclaim the lead before halftime; after Blous stopped Knight on a penalty kick, an own goal from Pedro Noschang put Lethbridge College up 2-1 going into halftime.

McLeod extended the Kodiaks' lead to 3-1 in the 63rd minute, heading home another Knight free kick within the box to give Lethbridge College a cushion. However, after Aminja Abbe was taken down in the box, Isreal-Welemongar stepped up in the 67th minute and converted his first penalty to bring the Broncos back within one. Ouattara levelled the score at 3-3 with a strike off the crossbar from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute, only for Knight to restore the Kodiaks' lead in the 74th minute after Blous handled a free kick beyond the goal line.

Isreal-Welemongar then converted a second penalty in the 77th minute to level the score at 4-4, then gave the Broncos a 5-4 lead in the 89th minute upon completing his hat-trick. However, Francis seized a point for the Kodiaks in added time as he corraled a ball in tight and beat Blous.

The Broncos wrap up their weekend by hosting the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, while the Kodiaks travel up Highway 2 to face the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings; both matches will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m.
