EDMONTON, AB - The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Arik Weersink of the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings has been selected as the 2024 ACAC Men's Hockey Playoff Most Valuable Player.

Following a tough start to the 2023-24 season, Weersink and the Kings went on a 10-2 run in the second half to earn a bye into the semi-finals where they clashed with the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. Allowing 10 goals on 141 shots in five games, Weersink backstopped the Kings to back-to-back championships as they swept the Vikings in the semi-finals and the Concordia University Thunder in the finals. The fifth-year goaltender finished the playoffs with a .929 save percentage and a 1.91 goals-against-average. He ends his college year with two championships while also raising over $600 for Alberta Sports and Recreation for the Blind as he pledged a dollar-per-save to this organization at the start of the season.

Head Coach Trevor Keeper explains if the fifth-year student-athlete could be a captain as a goaltender, he would probably be one.

“He’s a huge part of our leadership group and a very respected veteran player on our team. He goes out of his way to make sure everyone is treated equally. Also, he goes out of his way to make sure our team is involved in the community.”

Weersink finishes his hockey college career with a .898 save percentage and a 44-17-1 record. He is a fifth-year student-athlete from Lethbridge, AB enrolled in Kinesiology and Sports Studies. Following the end of the academic year, he plans on continuing his education by applying to optometry school.
