KINGS CROWN VOYAGEURS FOR WEEKEND SWEEP

LAC LA BICHE – The dealer wasn't kind to the Portage College Voyageurs this weekend. The hockey team, marking its 15th anniversary season with a special alumni and parents weekend, wasn't dealt any bad hands – its just that the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings seemed to always have a royal flush.

Saturday afternoon at the Bold Center, the visitors cleared the table, winning 5-2 and leaving town with six points in the bag after a 6-1 on Friday night. Chance Longjohn, Sean Michalevich, Chase Haygarth, Red Deer Player of the Game Dawson Leroux and Ryland McNinch into an empty net scored for the Kings while Shaye Sommerfeld and Blake Astorino replied for the Voyageurs.

Portage Head Coach Kevin McClelland noted that special teams were the key to this game, particularly given the number of powerplay opportunities the home squad had on the afternoon. The Voyageurs ended up with nine man advantages, including a couple of lengthy five-on-threes, but were only able to cash in once. The Kings, meanwhile, had three powerplays in the game.

"We had the discrepancy in the powerplays tonight and it would've been nice to cash in," said McClelland. "That second five-on-three, I don't how we didn't score. If we score there, it's a different game but it's not. We keep losing these games…That's a good team that we played tonight, though."

As they prepare to hit the road next weekend for a pair of games against perennial contender SAIT, the head coach still sees positives his young squad can build upon. He liked the team's work ethic in a game they were down 2-0 barely four minutes in and his players' willingness to battle until the final buzzer. He's just hoping for a more balanced attack and the ability to roll four lines against some tough opponents.

"I really liked (Portage Player of the Game Josh) Crooks' game tonight," said McClelland. "(Mikal) Chalifoux and Shaye (Sommerfeld) together were good too. We had two lines going but the third and fourth lines, man, you've just got to be even at the end of the night."
