Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference "To be Canada's premiere collegiate athletic conference by developing and inspiring leadership through excellence in academics, sport and citizenship"

January 13, 2024

It wasn't the prettiest of games, but the Clippers got the job done as they claimed first place in the ACAC standings on the strength of a 9-5 victory over the visiting Portage Voyageurs.
The first period unfolded much like last night's game and it seemed that Briercrest would have a somewhat easy afternoon as they scored the first two goals, hit a couple of posts, and carried a 3 to 1 shot ratio into the second period. The Voyageurs didn't go away, though, and converted on the powerplay to break Briercrest's movie-length shutout streak. That gave them a shot of confidence and it was back and forth the rest of the way. The Clippers' Reagan Poncelet and Portage's Blake Astorino, recipients of their team's respective Player of the Game awards, led the way as they fought to a 5-5 tie early in the third period.
It was then that a lack of discipline on the part of the guests landed them in penalty trouble, and Briercrest went to work with their league-best powerplay, scoring five times with the man advantage in the final frame.
With their third straight win, the Clippers solidified their grip on first place in the standings.
"We had a good pep talk in the second intermission, went out and worked hard, and came out with the win," summarized Colton Aikens afterward. "It feels great."
Briercrest will hit the road for a series with NAIT next weekend before returning to face Augustana Jan. 26-27.
