Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference "To be Canada's premiere collegiate athletic conference by developing and inspiring leadership through excellence in academics, sport and citizenship"

January 12, 2024

The first league game of the 2 nd half came on the coldest night of the winter but the action in the Barkman Arena was nothing but. The visiting Portage Voyageurs travelled the long trip to Caronport to face the white-hot Clipper team in a doubleheader weekend.

Both teams set out to test their opponents with hard hits early on in the first period and saw a steady parade to the penalty box as tempers flared. The Clippers got on the scoreboard first with a goal by #14, Zach Thususka was just four minutes into the frame and that would be the only goal of the period as Portage's netminder Luke Hall kept his team's hopes alive with some stellar saves.

The teams seemed to settle down after the intermission and there would only be 3 penalties in the second period. This allowed for more end-to-end plays and better flow to the game. Curtis Wiebe would get the second goal for the Clippers with 3 minutes remaining in the 2nd period set up from #21 Josh Lazowski in his first game as a Clipper, and #9 Daxton Budd. Just a minute later #3 Campbell Ens capitalized on the only infraction Portage took in the frame off a great play by #7 captain Jacob Arsenault and #55 Cole Stevenson, putting the Clippers up 3-0.

The third period was relatively quiet with only a couple of minor penalties handed out again. Portage's goaltender left the game just 4 minutes into the period with an injury and backup Jake Manners came in and played so well that he earned Player of the Game honours. He was able to turn away all the Clippers' scoring chances except one snipe from #55 Cole Stevenson late in the period. The game ended with the Portage Voyageurs unable to break through the outstanding goaltending of Clippers' Dominik Tmej, who earned his second shutout of the season.

Player of the Game for Portage was #31 Jake Manners Player of the Game for Briercrest was #26 Curtis Wiebe with one goal and one assist Shots on net were 36 for Briercrest and 20 for Portage.

The rematch goes on tomorrow at 2 pm at the Barkman Arena in Caronport, SK
