Kings score seven unanswered goals to defeat Voyageurs

Red Deer, October 27, 2023 - After scoring the opening goal of the game, the Portage College Voyageurs would allow the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings to score seven consecutive goals on their way to a 7-1 victory in Friday night hockey action.

In the first of two games in Red Deer, the Voyageurs would open up the game with a powerplay goal from forward Shaye Sommerfeld (University Transfer) three minutes into the game. Sommerfeld was later named the Voyageurs player of the game.

This would be the only goal of the opening period with Voyageurs outshooting the Kings 13-9.

Twenty-five seconds into the second period, forward Erik Miller (Bachelor of Business Administration) scored his first of three goals in the game to tie the game up at one. Miller would add an assist on forward Nolan Doell's (Bachelor of Education) powerplay goal to make it a four-point night. The Bachelor of Business Administration student-athlete was later named the player of the game for the Kings.

On top of the Doell goal and the Miller hat trick, the Kings would add three more to defeat the Voyageurs 7-1. This includes a short-handed goal from forward Holden Knights (Business Certificate) in the third period.

At the end of the game and with a 20-shot second period, the Kings outshot the Voyageurs 38-27 with goaltender Kristian Lyon steering aside 26 shots for his first win of the season.  

These two teams will go head-to-head tomorrow afternoon with the puck dropping at 1 pm in Red Deer.
