NAIT 3 at SAIT 4

Calgary, AB – The SAIT Trojans Men's hockey team started the season off with a win on Friday night, beating the NAIT Ooks 4-3 at home and giving them a 1-0 record to begin the year.

The Trojans came out flying, hemming NAIT in their zone until #27 Tye Carriere tipped home a point shot to give SAIT the 1-0 lead just 1:33 into the game.

NAIT responded well, though, outshooting the Trojans 13-5 for the rest of the first period. After a few great saves from SAIT goalie #30 Andrew MacLean, the Ooks tied the game up 1-1 with 12:17 left in the first. Both teams would have their chances on the powerplay before intermission, but neither team could put one in the net and the score remained 1-1 after the first 20 minutes of play.

SAIT player of the game #27 Tye Carriere would give SAIT the lead back five minutes into the second, with his second of the game from #16 Zach Cox and #12 Brett Trentham.

The Trojans would extend their lead to two quickly after, with #15 Tanner Sidaway scoring a great goal on a shorthanded breakaway. But before the penalty could expire, NAIT answered back with a powerplay goal with 12 minutes still to go in the second.

#13 Tye Carriere would cement his player of the game status a few minutes later, with a beautiful goal off a shot from the face-off dot, reestablishing a Trojans two goal lead that they would take into the third period.

NAIT would again outshoot SAIT 13-7 in the third, but Trojans goalie #30 Andrew MacLean made big save after big save to prevent the Ooks from getting back into the game. NAIT would score to get within one in the final minute, but the Trojans shut the door and came away with the 4-3 opening night victory.

SAIT will look to spoil the Ooks home opener tomorrow night, looking to win back-to-back against NAIT and start the season 2-0.
