Vikings claim win over Trojans

CAMROSE, AB - Finding offensive success, the Vikings defeated the SAIT Trojans 4-2 Friday night at Encana Arena.

With the win, the Vikings secure an undisputed claim of fifth in the standings with 9 points and lead the sixth place Briercreast Clippers by one point. The Clippers, however, have played 13 of the season's 16 game schedule, while the Vikings have only played 10.

Across the Ice, the Trojans remain in fourth place in the standings with 11 points in 11 games played.

First-year goalie Braedon Fleming backstopped the Trojans in the loss, making 21 saves, while fellow rookie Tanner Klassen netted both goals for the visitors.

Helping the home side to victory was rookie Kyle Ford who had two goals and one assist. Other Viking's goals were scored by captain Jarod Hovde and Jordan Mish. Daniel Moody made an impressive 40 saves to earn the win.

Opening the scoring on the night, Hovde's one-timer from the top of the circle, deflected off a Trojan defender to put the Vikings up by one. Mish would add another stylish goal for the Vikings before the end of the first frame, when Jake Gudjonson behind the back pass from below the goal line found Mish to close it out, 2-0.

With the Vikings up 3-0 nearing the end of the second period, Fleming broke into the Vikings zone, sending a wrist shot past Moody's blocker to get the visiting side on the board.

The Vikings and Trojans would both go on to add one goal apiece in the third and final frame, however, it would be too little too late for the Trojans, as the home side takes it, 4-2.

Looking ahead, both teams will meet again tomorrow night in Calgary as the Trojans host the final game of the season series. Currently, the series is tied at one game apiece. The puck drop will be at 7pm. Catch all the action on ACACtv.
