Thunder Open 2022 With Hard Fought Win

Edmonton, AB (January 8, 2022) - The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder returned to action from winter break as they welcomed the Briercrest Clippers in Saturday night action. The Thunder opened the game with four unanswered goals and then hunkered down to survive Briercrest's comeback attempts as they took this one 4-2.

Chasetan Braid opened the scoring for the Thunder just under nine minutes into the game as he forced a turnover on the forecheck and made no mistake burying it in the Briercrest net. The Thunder kept the pressure going through the first period and were eventually rewarded for the effort as Keegan Tiringer scored a power play marker with just over a minute left in the period. The Thunder took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Thunder kept the momentum going into the second period as Tyler Benko scored less than 30 seconds into the period to extend the lead. Just over two minutes later, Curtis Peck added a shorthanded marker as the Thunder scored four straight to open the game. The four goal lead was short-lived, however, as just over 30 seconds later Briercrest scored a power play marker to get back in it. The Clippers added a second goal later in the period to enter the second intermission with a 4-2 scoreline.

The Third period was fully of exciting back and forth play as the Clippers tried to even the game up and the Thunder attempted to withstand the comeback attempts. Both teams enjoyed stellar goaltending as Thunder goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped all 14 shots he faced in the third period, and Clippers goalie Billy Cawthorn stopped all 15 shots he faced in the period as the 4-2 score stood to become the final score. The win puts the Thunder in first place in the ACAC, one point ahead of NAIT, but the Ooks have a game in hand. The One Team Sports Players of the Game were #35 Billy Cawthorn for the Clippers and #30 Griffin Bowerman for the Thunder.

After the game, first year Thunder goalie Griffin Bowerman commented: "the boys came out and started strong, we scored a couple goals in the first to start things well. We took a minute off in the second and let them back in it. But we managed the puck well in the third, the boys were blocking shots and clearing the way."

The Thunder continue their season next Friday as they welcome the Augustana Vikings.
