Briercrest Earns Decisive Win Over NAIT

By Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers (12-7) played host to the NAIT Ooks (8-10) in ACAC men's basketball action. With both teams hungry for the win, it was the Clippers who gelled in the second half, cruising to a 93-80 victory.

Off the opening tip, Briercrest's Jude Shepherd-Hills and Francis Dogani dashed to the rim for scores. After NAIT's Yasser Abdullahi and Shepherd-Hills traded triples, Dogani and Stian Gleddie swapped tough buckets at the rim. Abdullahi continued to connect from beyond the arc, with Corbin Gengenbach and Owen Shepherd-Hills responding for Briercrest. After Owen Weaver sliced through the lane for a NAIT slam, Dogani banked a long three at the buzzer.

NAIT's Antonio Benjamin muscled to the hoop for a pair of early scores which the home team matched. Clippers' Riley Seaborn sprinted to the paint and found the bank open in response to Gleddie's efforts. Gengenbach and Kaedyn Banilevic made good on their efforts before Abdullahi bombed away from distance. The Clippers took a slim lead into the half as rookie Asher Elstad twirled to the paint for two and Riley Seaborn made a short jumper.

After the intermission, Seaborn collected a steal and immediately made good from range and inside, but Gleddie and Griffin Lorenz responded quickly to keep things close. Elstad's three led to Oroma Bongomin's uncontested slam, a steal by Banilevic and a score from Jude Shepherd-Hills. Benjamin and Lorenz scored at the rim, but Dogani nailed a transition three and dissected the NAIT defense with a driving layup.

Determined to keep his team close, Gleddie stepped up his game on the offensive end. After Lorenz and Bongomin exchanged triples, Dogani weaved through the paint for a score. The Ooks fed Lorenz and Benjamin at the hoop and NAIT had designs on a comeback, but a three from the scorer's table by Seaborn crushed their spirits.

Player of the Game for the NAIT Ooks was Griffin Lorenz, who notched 18 points and three boards; teammates Yasser Abdullahi and Stian Gleddie chipped in 19 and 17 points, respectively, while Owen Weaver collected eight points, eight assists, and eight rebounds in a well-rounded effort. Riley Seaborn had 19 points for Briercrest to secure the honour. Teammate Francis Dogani led all scorers with 22 and Jude Shepherd-Hills went off for 20 points and 15 rebounds.
