Clippers Outlast Kings in Close Contest

By Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers (9-7) tipped off against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (11-6) in an important contest in ACAC men's basketball. The Clippers showed grit and resolve in capturing an exciting 90-87 triumph over the Kings.

Red Deer stormed to an early advantage as Bernardo Moller and Efe Iyamu connected from downtown and José Mauro Barrozo worked inside, and full court pressure from the Kings succeeded in forcing the hosts into numerous errors. Although Briercrest forwards Oroma Bongomin and Asher Elstad bullied their way inside and Riley Seaborn found his shot, the Clippers struggled to cut into the deficit.

Early in the second quarter, Briercrest rookie Owen Shepherd-Hills converted several chances, but Moller answered from distance and Eduardo Crespo connected on a spinning drive. When the Kings found themselves in foul trouble midway through the second frame, Bongomin capitalized on their caution. Barrozo continued to attack the rim, but Clippers' Kaedyn Banilevic and Corbin Gengenbach answered to keep things close.

Out of the break, Davin Eskins-Isidore asserted himself on offense, but Seaborn and Francis Dogani flashed their skills and Elstad dropped a bomb from distance. Briercrest seized the lead on Dogani's smooth floater and a pair of contested treys from Bongomin before Deandre Rowe made good in the paint to end the third quarter.

After Carter Waind made a three point play, Moller hit from distance and Barrozo returned to his office in the paint. Threes from Bongomin and Gengenbach gave the hosts a slim margin, and in the game's final moments, Crespo was rejected at the rim and Seaborn hit two free throws to give Briercrest an improbable win.

The Player of the Game for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings was Davin Eskins-Isidore with 14 points and six boards; teammate José Mauro Barrozo led the Kings with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Oroma Bongomin secured the honour for the home squad, registering a game-high 28 points, while Riley Seaborn delivered a gigantic game with 15 points, 10 boards, and eight dimes.
