Kodiaks pull away late to beat Broncos

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks took control late in the third quarter, pulling away to defeat the Olds College Broncos 115-90 at the Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.

Filip Karanovic led all scorers with 32 points to go with eight assists, five rebounds and four steals for the Kodiaks (9-5) as they retain fourth place in the ACAC South with the win. Drayden Walburger also turned in a strong performance with 25 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Declan Peterson flirted with a triple-double as he finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.

For the Broncos (5-10), Alonzo Tan posted a season-high 26 points to go with eight assists, while Gurech Gurech added 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and Isaiah White contributed 12 points, four rebounds and four assists off the bench.

The Kodiaks did a lot of damage from outside as they shot 51.9 per cent from three-point range, including a barrage of six threes in the opening four minutes to jump out to an early 20-10 lead, eventually closing the quarter up 30-23. However, the Broncos battled back in the second quarter to close the gap to 50-49 heading to halftime.

After an early sequence where the teams traded baskets, Lethbridge established itself in the late stages of the third quarter, taking an 84-76 lead into the fourth on the strength of a 17-point frame from Karanovic. Walburger served as the closer for the Kodiaks, posting 13 of his 25 points in a dominant fourth quarter.

The Kodiaks and Broncos will square off in the back end of their doubleheader tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Olds. The matchup will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
