Strong Team Effort Secures Clippers Victory

By Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers (6-7) hosted the Ambrose Lions (2-12) in ACAC men's basketball action. Keen to solidify their postseason hopes, Briercrest defended their home court with a gritty 87-81 win.

The Clippers' halfcourt offense found an early rhythm and they defended the paint with vigour and purpose. Threes from Kaedyn Banilevic, Asher Elstad and Brolin Simes enabled them to establish a secure early lead.

Opening the second quarter, Francis Dogani scooted unhindered to the rim for the Clippers before setting the table for Banilevic's second triple. Beautiful passing from the Clippers led to Riley Seaborn's bomb from the corner, but Ambrose's Sunday Kher matched his effort. After draining an elbow three, Dogani found a streaking Owen Shepherd-Hills. Elstad traded from range with Ambrose's Jackson Earle and Ty Schenk going into the half.

Out of the break, Earle and teammate Terrell Keys traded threes with Banilevic and Shepherd-Hills, who notched a pair in quick succession. Clippers' Zach Martens took a feed from Corbin Gengenbach and crushed the rim, but Kher answered with a three. Seaborn had a steal and score but Lions' Jaden Brennan knotted the game with a three. Gengenbach's bold drive preceded another three from Earle and a short jumper from Kher as Ambrose edged ahead.

Lions' Wisdom Sunday received a sweet dish at the rim for an easy two, but Martens twice bulldozed his way to the basket in reply. Earle knocked down an elbow three but Briercrest's Oroma Bongomin replied with scores on three straight possessions. Kher and Earle hit from beyond the arc before Bongomin and Dogani went to work. A late three from Lions' Mateja Vukic made it close, but a tough defensive board from Martens and free throws from Gengenbach sealed the deal.

Jackson Earle of the visiting Ambrose Lions earned Player of the Game honours with 17 points, including a game-high five treys. Briercrest's Francis Dogani enjoyed a strong performance as he registered 18 points and dropped seven dimes.
