Broncos outlast Lions in Olds

The Olds College Broncos turned up the tempo on home court, defeating the Ambrose University Lions 125-110 at Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.

The Broncos (5-8) saw six players, including all their starters, score in double figures, led by a 31-point effort from Gurech Gurech to go with five assists and three rebounds, while Peter Adonri added 25 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists. Logan Bennett chipped in with 19 points, six assists and three rebounds, and Alonzo Tan contributed a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists for Olds College, who shot 57.1 per cent from the field.

For the Lions (1-12), Ty Schenk led all scorers with 33 points and six rebounds, while Hunter Snyder added 17 points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench, and Mateja Vukic posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists for Ambrose, who went 46.4 per cent from three-point range.

Olds College led for the majority of the opening quarter, eventually taking a 26-23 edge into the second after Ambrose briefly took the lead late in the frame. The Lions remained within a possession for most of the second quarter, but the Broncos closed the quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 61-50 lead into halftime.

The three-ball brought the Lions back within striking distance in the third as they closed the gap to three before the Broncos took an 89-84 lead into the fourth, where the Broncos eventually pulled away with Gurech scoring 10 points in the frame.

The Broncos and Lions will complete their weekend home-and-home in Calgary tomorrow at 8 p.m.; the game will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
