Broncos outlast Ooks in Olds

The Olds College Broncos are in the win column after defeating the NAIT Ooks 89-80 on Sunday at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The Broncos (1-4) were led by Peter Adonri's 19 points to go with nine rebounds, while Kenny Bates posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Nate Akade chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench, while Alonzo Tan had a complete game with six points, 11 assists, four rebounds and three steals.

For NAIT (3-3), Griffin Lorenz had 19 points of his own along with four rebounds, while Yasser Abdullahi added 18 points and five assists, and Gabriel Humilde chipped in with 13 points and five assists.

The Broncos jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, then kept expanding it over the course of the first quarter to carve out a 17-8 advantage. However, the Ooks kept firing back, eventually cutting the lead to 28-21 through the opening 10 minutes of play.

NAIT continued to claw back in the second quarter to get level at 34-34, only for back-to-back Artemus Rapada three-pointers to restore a six-point lead for the Broncos. However, the Ooks answered with an 8-0 run to briefly take the lead late in the second before the Broncos sent it to halftime deadlocked at 42-42.

The third quarter saw the Broncos gradually push ahead as Peter Adonri and Gurech Gurech scored eight points apiece in the frame to help Olds College take a 66-58 lead into the fourth, where Akade helped ice the game with eight points of his own. A pair of Lorenz three-pointers would keep NAIT within striking distance in the final minutes, but the Ooks would get no closer than seven.

Next up, the Broncos head south for a Remembrance Day matchup with the SAIT Trojans at 5 p.m., while the Ooks will host the St. Mary's University Lightning on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.

Both matchups will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
