Wolves outlast Broncos in Olds

The Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves seized momentum in the second half, then held on to defeat the Olds College Broncos 116-109 at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday.

Emmanuel Iloka was dominant for the Wolves (3-3) as he finished with 38 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three steals, while also getting strong support from Christian Liawanag (24 points, five assists, four rebounds) and Daniel Zandbergen (20 points, five rebounds and four assists).

For the Broncos (0-4), Logan Bennett led the way with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Peter Adonri added 17 points and five rebounds, and Gurech Gurech finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Both teams came out firing in the opening quarter, with the Broncos gradually poking ahead over the course of the first to take a 29-23 lead through the opening 10 minutes. The back-and-forth nature of the matchup continued in the second quarter, though the Wolves pushed back against Olds College, with a buzzer-beating three from Iloka giving the Wolves a 54-53 lead at halftime.

Northwestern Polytechnic then came out firing in the third quarter, extending their lead out to as much as 16 before ultimately taking an 87-75 lead into the fourth, where the Broncos mounted a few comeback attempts, but could never get closer than five points.

The Wolves head back to Grande Prairie for an extended break before playing the SAIT Trojans on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m., while the Broncos are on court tomorrow against the NAIT Ooks, with opening tip-off set for 4 p.m.
