Clippers Overcome Deficit to Conquer Olds

By Jeff Misener

Fresh off their season-opening success over the Olds Broncos, the Briercrest Clippers looked for a weekend sweep to begin their 2023-24 season. In front of a boisterous home crowd, the Clippers came from behind to steal an exciting 87-86 victory.

Olds opened with lively intent as BJ Lacy and Paul Adonri cashed in at the rim, while Briercrest's Francis Dogani and Oroma Bongomin provided the hosts with their first moments of joy. Clippers' Zack Martens and Broncos' Isaiah White also exchanged scores.

Olds cancelled the Clippers' first quarter lead as Ethan Horb and Logan Bennett delivered from beyond the arc and Nathan Akade dropped a floater. The visitors rolled up their sleeves on defense, limiting the Clippers to single opportunities, and entered halftime with a well-deserved lead.

Following the break, Olds extended their edge as Alonzo Tan, Lacy, and Gurech Gurech found their scoring touch. The momentum shifted, however, as Asher Elstad injected life into the dormant Clippers' attack with some defensive gems and furious offense. Bongomin's fast break dunk and smooth triple sandwiched a steal and score from Kaedyn Banilevic as the Clippers whittled away at the deficit.

Lacy crushed a breakaway dunk to open the final frame, but Bongomin, brimming with passion and purpose, singlehandedly erased the visitor's advantage with an array of elbow threes and buckets at the rim. The Clippers coolly and repeatedly solved the Olds' press and seized the lead on an uncontested layup by Dogani. Riley Seaborn's clutch steal on Olds' final possession, and free throws by Dogani and Seaborn, secured the win.

Oroma Bongomin went off for 38 points, including five triples, to lead all scorers and secure Player of the Game honours for Briercrest, while Clipper guard Francis Dogani drilled 18 points and dished five assists. For Olds, Alonzo Tam registered 17 points, seven dimes, and five rebounds to receive the POG recognition, with help from Nate Akade's 14 points off the bench.
