Men's Basketball Huskies outlast Vikings in overtime

Fort McMurray, Alta. (October 20, 2023) - Augustana Vikings 73 Keyano Huskies 88 (OT) 

The Keyano Huskies Men's Basketball team had to work a little overtime, but kept their regular season winning streak in tact with an 88-73 win Friday night against the visiting University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings. 

DJ Haynes led all Huskies with 19 points, one of four to reach double digits that included Omeechi Williams (15), Keenan Miller (14), and Nahshon Hurst (13). McMurrayite Keellaa Gatwech put in a solid performance with sevne points and eight rebounds, tying him for the team lead in boards on the day with Miller and Williams. 

Leading by 11 at the half, the Huskies saw their lead evaporate in the third quarter as a 25-14 third quarter put the Vikings back in the game. A wild finish to the game saw both teams tied at 70. The opportunity to refocus on the overtime period saw the Huskies pull away for good as a 9-0 run in the first two minutes of the overtime period put the game on ice. 

A valiant effort by the Vikings, Degner led all scorers on both sides with 24 points while fellow starters Jack Smilski and Mark Parma chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Smilski added 10 rebounds for the double-double. 

Up next for the two teams is a rematch at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre on Saturday afternoon with tip-off at 3:00 p.m. on ACAC TV and Telus Optik 1998.
