MBB | Kodiaks Remain On Top in a Sold Out Gym

Jan 24th, 2020 - The Lethbridge College Kodiaks opened their weekend at home Friday night against the Red Deer College Kings. The Kodiaks would host a back to back home series against the Kings.

Energy was high as the game began in the Val Matteotti gym Friday night. The Kodiaks trailed behind the Kings for the first half, however they came out with authority in the third quarter sending them to a high victory.

Lethbridge stepped onto the court in the first quarter with patience and composure as they purposely moved the ball around the floor. Fourth year, Tyronn King of Red Deer was very effective in the first quarter as he kept being an offensive threat for the Kodiaks defence. As the game progressed, the Kings started to close in on the Kodiaks which in turn gave them the lead. Spencer Klassen popped a perfect pass behind his head to Brett Hochhausen to tuck another two points in just before the buzzer. The first quarter ended with a score of 22-19 for Red Deer.

As the second quarter played on, the Kings maintained their edge over Lethbridge. The game was getting contentious as the disposition of the game shifted into a more desperate feel. Lethbridge inched closer to taking over the lead as they entered halftime with a score of 47-48.

Orin Porter Jr. of Lethbridge opened up the third quarter with a stellar point under the hoop. Shortly after, Chase Bohne found himself on a breakaway where he put up another great point as he faked out Kings defence. To top off this fresh start, Brock Dewsbery then buried a deep three which gave the Kodiaks a six point stretch ahead of Red Deer. Porter Jr. continued the Kodiaks tear by slam dunking, forcing the crowd to their feet in a sold out home game.

Amidst the fourth quarter starting with a score of 75-56, the Kodiaks looked to protect their lead as well as their winning streak. This required strong defence on Lethbridge's end to minimize the Kings scoring opportunities. The tight defence under the key forced Red Deer to shoot careless three's in the final quarter.

With an incredible comeback, Lethbridge earned the victory with a final score of 93-71 improving their record to 14-0. The Red Deer Kings will return to the Val Matteotti tomorrow in an effort to redeem themselves of Friday's upset.
