ACAC Hall of Fame Athlete Inductee: Wen Wang

HONOURED ATHLETE INDUCTEE

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Wen Wang of the MacEwan Griffins as a 2024 inductee into the ACAC Hall of Fame in the Athlete category.

Wang swiftly asserted his dominance in post-secondary badminton upon arriving at MacEwan from China in 1988, securing three consecutive CCAA men’s singles championships. His remarkable leadership also propelled the Griffins to three consecutive ACAC team championships and three consecutive CCAA team championships.

During his tenure at MacEwan, Wang emerged as the premier badminton athlete in North America, achieving a notable world ranking of 20th. His prowess extended beyond collegiate competition as he guided the Griffins to victory in an exhibition series against Canada’s national badminton team.

Recognized for his outstanding achievements, Wang was honored as MacEwan’s Male Athlete of the Year across all sports in 1989-90. Additionally, his contributions to the sport earned him a place in the CCAA Hall of Fame, Griffins Wall of Distinction, and the Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame.

Continuing his dedication to badminton, Wang has made significant strides in nurturing talent and promoting the sport's growth. As the owner and coach at B-Active Badminton Club, and having previously coached at Royal Glenora, both in Edmonton, he has played a pivotal role in shaping numerous national and Pan-American champions. Notably, his children, Takeisha Wang and Desmond Wang, achieved CCAA titles in badminton while competing for Concordia University, a testament to Wang's enduring influence and legacy in the sport.
