ACAC Hall of Fame Athlete Inductee: Ron Amyotte

HONOURED ATHLETE INDUCTEE

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Ron Amyotte of the NAIT Ooks as a 2024 inductee into the ACAC Hall of Fame in the Athlete category.

Ron Amyotte stands as a trailblazer in the annals of NAIT athletics, achieving feats unparalleled in the history of the ACAC men's hockey. His remarkable tenure spans three seasons, during which he consistently excelled both on and off the ice.

A cornerstone of the NAIT hockey program, Amyotte etched his name in the annals of sporting history by becoming the first athlete from NAIT to compete for more than two seasons and secure a spot on the first team all-conference selection while also clinching an ACAC championship in every season of his participation.

His achievements are nothing short of remarkable. Amyotte played pivotal roles in three ACAC championship victories (1984-85, 1985-86, 1986-87), led the charge to two CCAA national championships (1984-85, 1985-86), and added a bronze medal in the CCAA tournament (1986-87) to his illustrious resume.

Remarkably, Amyotte is one of just ten players nationwide to have played on two national champion teams and receive two individual CCAA awards. His leadership was evident as he captained the NAIT team for two seasons (1985-86, 1986-87), steering them to a CCAA championship and two ACAC titles.

Even beyond his playing days, Amyotte's impact endured. He transitioned seamlessly into the role of assistant coach for NAIT during the 1988-89 season, contributing to the team's triumph in securing their fourth CCAA championship.

Amyotte's accolades extend beyond the ACAC and CCAA realms. As a member of the 1983-84 Weyburn Red Wings, he hoisted the RBC Cup national championship trophy and was honored with the prestigious Roland Mercier Trophy as the event's most valuable player. This remarkable achievement led to his induction into both the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Ron became the first hockey player to grace the NAIT Athletics Wall of Fame in 2007. His legacy continues to be celebrated with inductions into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

Throughout his career, Amyotte's exceptional talent and dedication earned him numerous team awards from NAIT Athletics, including Best Playoff Performer, Most Valuable Player, Top Scorer, and Greatest Contribution to Overall Success.

Setting records and setting standards, Amyotte's impact on the conference is unparalleled. He remains the conference's all-time leader in regular-season goals (85) and points (151) and holds the record for most shorthanded goals in a single season (6), a testament to his offensive abilities.

Amyotte's stellar performance on the ice also translated into individual recognition. He led the conference in regular-season goals twice (1984-85, 1986-87), and his regular-season point total of 151 stands as the highest among men's hockey players who competed for three seasons in conference history. His goal-per-game average of 1.308 remains unmatched among players who played more than two seasons.

In a league where excellence is the norm, Amyotte's achievements shine brightly. His three first-team all-conference selections solidify his place in history as the first skater (non-goaltender) in conference hockey to receive such honors.

Ron Amyotte's legacy is not just in the records he set, but in the standards he established and the inspiration he provided to generations of athletes. His induction into the ACAC Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career and enduring impact on the sport of hockey.
