ACAC Hall of Fame Coach Inductee: Murray Orvis
HONOURED COACH INDUCTEE
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is thrilled to announce Murray Orvis of the MacEwan Griffins as a 2024 inductee into the ACAC Hall of Fame in the Coach category.
Orvis began his lengthy coaching career at MacEwan as an assistant coach with the Griffins during the 1988-89 season and went on to be head coach of the team for 16 of the next 20 seasons.
He won 112 of 179 regular season games at the helm of the Griffins, adding 13 playoff wins – including guiding the Griffins to a CCAA bronze medal in 2006 and two ACAC Championships (1998 and 2005). His teams won a total of eight ACAC medals over his tenure.
Orvis was named ACAC Coach of the Year three times (1994, 1999 and 2007) and was honoured with the conference’s Ron Lavery Fair Play award in 1998 for informing the NAIT coaching staff they were at risk of forfeiture by potentially playing an ineligible player.
Orvis also served as the ACAC Soccer Convenor for several seasons and was a huge force in guiding the growth of the sport in the conference.
He was inducted in the MacEwan Wall of Distinction in 2004 and his name emblazons a trophy awarded annually to MacEwan’s Team of the Year.
