ACAC Hall of Fame Inductee: SAIT Men’s Hockey 2006/07-2009/10

With ACAC men’s hockey launched back in 1965-66, only two members have ever won four-consecutive Championships in a row. The first was the Edmonton-based NAIT Ooks from 1983-1987, followed by the SAIT Trojans 2006-2010. During these four seasons, the Trojans’ regular season record was an impressive 76-15, finished up by a 24-10 playoff record.

Including the two seasons prior to their four-banner streak, the Trojans hold the ACAC men’s hockey record of most consecutive seasons in an ACAC Championship finals with seven (2004-2011) and most consecutive playoff series wins with nine (2006-2011). The consecutive championship run in 2006-2010 was earned on the basis of the following best-of-five series’ results: 2006/07 SAIT 3 - NAIT 2; 2007/08 SAIT 3 - MacEwan Griffins 0; 2008/09SAIT 3 Mount Royal Cougars 2; and 2009/10 SAIT 3 Concordia Thunder 2.

The gold medal teams were led by head coach Ken Babey who was recognized during those years with two ACAC Men’s Hockey Coach of the Year honors (2006-07, 2008-09). At the time of his retirement in 2014, Bad had coached the Trojans for 27 years and recorded the most regular-season and post-season hockey games behind the bench by a Canadian post-secondary coach (849), and the most regular season and playoff wins in Canadian post-secondary hockey (534).

In addition to coaching excellence, the Trojans players were recognized during that time with a total of 12 ACAC All-Conference selections, as well as one ACAC Most Valuable Player (Mike Ullrich 2009-10) and two ACAC Top Scholastic Players (Reese St. Goddard 2007-08, Jon Malin 2009-10).
