2023-2024 ACAC Overall Coach of the Year

Edmonton, AB (April 5, 2024) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Chris King of the Lakeland Rustlers as the 2023-2024 ACAC Overall Coach of the Year.

King, a Train to Compete certified coach, has served as the head coach for the Lakeland Rustlers women’s basketball team for the past 16 seasons. He has also engaged in numerous professional development opportunities and hosts a weekly podcast during the season titled "Hold My Clipboard," discussing all things ACAC basketball.

In the past four competitive seasons, King has led the Rustlers women’s basketball team to three ACAC Championship Gold medals and two CCAA medals. In the 2023–24 season, the Rustler women’s basketball team had a perfect 20–0 record in the regular season, went 3–0 in the ACAC playoffs, and achieved a perfect 3–0 record at the national championships. They became one of two ACAC women’s basketball teams in the history of the conference to complete a perfect season and win a national title.

“Chris has worked hard to build a strong women’s basketball program over the years,” commented Alan Rogan, Lakeland’s athletic director. “His passion for the sport of basketball and his dedication to his student athletes are evident in the team's success both on and off the court. The program has gained respect locally, provincially, and nationally.”

King has also recently coached U-18 and U-16 boys' teams locally and is currently in Spain coaching a U-16 girls’ team from Saskatchewan. He also coordinates the Rustlers Youth Basketball program in Lloydminster, focusing on skill development for children from kindergarten to grade 7. During the summer, he oversees the Rustlers Club Basketball program and multiple camps in the Lloydminster community.

Coach King also works to develop future coaches and is currently mentoring two former Rustler athletes who serve as assistants with the team. We are confident that under King’s mentorship, both will become strong coaches in the future.
