2024 ACAC Women's Basketball Coaches of the Year

Edmonton, AB (February 29, 2024) – 

North Female Coach of the Year | Chris King | Lakeland Rustlers:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Chris King of the Lakeland Rustlers has been named the 2023-2024 ACAC Women’s Basketball North Coach of the Year.

King is a certified NCCP Train to Compete coach with numerous professional development courses completed. The 2023–2024 season will mark the 12th year in the 16 seasons that King has led the Rustlers team into the postseason. In the 2021- 2022 season, King led the Rustlers to an ACAC gold medal and a CCAA Bronze medal. This year, the Rustlers women’s team finished the regular season with a 20 – 0 record and a first-place finish in the north division and good enough to retain the number one national ranking into the playoffs. This is the sixth time King has received the Coach of the Year award.

“Chris is a very dedicated coach,” commented Alan Rogan, Lakeland’s athletic director. “His commitment to the sport of basketball is incredible. He invests a significant amount of time into each student-athlete he coaches and sets high expectations for his team which he works with every one of the student-athletes to achieve.”

King has been mentoring two previous student athletes who are involved in the program as assistant coaches. He also coordinates the Rustlers Youth Basketball program in Lloydminster that focuses on the development of skills predominantly in young children. In the summer King also coaches a number of basketball camps. King recently started a weekly podcast, “Hold my Clipboard” that talks about all things ACAC Basketball and runs weekly during the season.

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2024 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship hosted by St. Mary's University from March 1-2.


South Female Coach of the Year | Ken McMurray | Lethbridge Kodiaks:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Ken McMurray of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks has been named the 2023-2024 ACAC Women’s South Division Basketball Coach of the Year.

Coach McMurray hails from Cardston, AB., where he is enjoying the retired life as a former Principal of Cardston High School. This is Coach McMurray’s third year at the helm and his second time earning this honor from his fellow coaches.

“To be honored for the second time in his first three years of leading the Kodiaks women’s basketball program says a lot about the culture and commitment that Ken is building.” says Todd Caughlin, Kodiaks Athletic Director. “It was an end to the season that no one wanted to see but the push in the second half to earn the number one spot says a lot to the job that Ken and his coaching staff did in working their way through a very tough second half schedule. I’m proud of what the Kodiaks accomplished this year and for Ken earning this recognition for a second time.”
