2024 ACAC Charles Morter Memorial Award

Edmonton, AB (February 26, 2024) –

Charles Morter Memorial Award | Nicole Homan | Red Deer Queens:

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Nicole Homan of the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens Curling team has been selected as the 2023-2024 Charles Morter Memorial Award recipient.

Red Deer’s Homan was chosen by curling coaches across the ACAC for best exemplifying Morter’s spirit, dedication, leadership and sportsmanship toward other curlers. As a third-year lead on the RDP Queens, Homan makes impactful contributions to her team, sport and community.

“It was an easy decision for the RDP Curling coaching staff to nominate Nicole for the Charles Morter Memorial Award,” says Brad Hamilton, Red Deer Polytechnic Curling Head Coach. “Nicole is a dedicated student-athlete who is always willing to help. She leads by example and helps to grow the game at all levels.”

Homan has shared her time and curling expertise with Special Olympics and high school athletes as a volunteer coach. She has also volunteered with the Red Deer Curling Club to give back to the curling community and help promote the sport.

For the past two years, Homan has volunteered for The Grand Slam of Curling in Red Deer, leading social media for the entire event. She also manages and creates engaging content for the RDP Curling social media accounts.

As a Bachelor of Education Secondary student, Homan mentors and supports youth by volunteering for school reading programs. She has also been involved in events and initiatives that Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics has organized and promoted to encourage mental wellness for students.

Homan, who is Vice Chairperson of the RDP Student-Athletes Advisory Council, collaborates with her peers to provide academic, social and volunteering opportunities for the Kings and Queens. In the fall, she helped to organize the RDP Athletics Food Drive in support of the Students’ Association Emergency Student Food Bank.

As a premier lead and captain, Homan has been a key contributor to the success of Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Curling, helping to guide the team to a 10-2 combined record at the ACAC Fall and Winter Regionals. After the two regionals, the RDP Queens ranked second among the ACAC Women’s Curling teams and qualified to compete at the ACAC Curling Championships.

This prestigious award was recognized at the 2024 ACAC Curling Championships.
