Takeisha Wang honoured as 2018-19 ACAC Female Athlete of the Year

EDMONTON, AB (April 8, 2019) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Takeisha Wang of Concordia University of Edmonton has been selected as the 2018-19 ACAC Female Athlete of the Year.

This prestigious award is based on personal level of achievement through competition, team level of achievement through competition, academic accomplishements and achievment, campus involvement and leadership, as well as community involvement. Wang was a standout applicant in every way possible.

The Concordia Thunder badminton team captured the team gold medal at the ACAC Conference Championships this season. Takeisha, a 4th year Bachelor of Science student from Edmonton, Alberta, had an incredible year for the Thunder badminton team. Takeisha posted an impressive 9-0 record in women's singles and 12-0 in mixed doubles over four ACAC tournaments including the ACAC Championship where she captured the mixed doubles gold medal with her brother Desmond. At the CCAA National Badminton Championships in Truro, Nova Scotia, the duo of Takeisha and Desmond would go 7-0 to completed the perfect season and capture the CCAA Mixed Doubles Gold Medal.

"After 4 years of watching Takeisha, she continually impresses as an athlete and as a person. Each year she continues to push herself the highest limit athletically and academically. What a way to cap off the year to a perfect season. This award is truly an honour for her and for Concordia University of Edmonton as a whole," said Joel Mrak, Director of Athletics for Concordia University of Edmonton.

This will be the fourth year in a row that Takiesha has made an appearance at the CCAA Championships. In 2016 she earned a women's doubles bronze medal, in 2017 a women's singles silver medal, and in 2018 a women's singles gold medal. What made this year's season so special was that she was able to win the gold medal with her younger brother Desmond, as it is something they have wanted to do for some time. Additionally, Takeisha was recognized as the CCAA Player of the Year, ACAC Female Badminton Player of the Year, CCAA All-Canadian and CCAA Academic All-Canadian.

Honorable mentions and fellow nominees for the 2018-19 ACAC Female Athlete of the Year were Rae Sigurdson (Lakeland College Rustlers | WVB), Brittney Thibeaux (Olds College Broncos | WBB), Deanna Kuan (SAIT Trojans | WSOC), Jill Stewart (RDC Queens | XC), Sophia Nowicki (Lethbridge College Kodiaks | XC).
