ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

In the best atmosphere a college athlete could play in, Hailey Somers ended her career on the perfect note for the Rustlers women's basketball team.

The fifth-year guard from Regina, SK was named MVP of the CCAA Championship, hosted by Lakeland College March 13-16. Over the course of the tournament, Somers posted 37 points, 2 assists, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, all while playing lockdown defence.

Somers had multiple game changing plays in the semifinal against the Ch. Saint-Lambert Cavaliers, in which she posted 21 points and went 11-13 on free throws. Then, in the gold medal game, she had 12 points, going 6-7 from the charity stripe and coming up with multiple deflections in the final quarter, helping the Rustlers earn a hard-fought 64-55 victory.

In securing that victory, Somers and the Rustlers completed their historic season, going 26-0 and winning CCAA gold for the first time as a program. All in front of nearly 1,000 screaming fans in Lloydminster.

Her consistency, focus and poise have always been an asset for the combo guard, and those attributes were on display in the biggest games of the year. From year one to year five, Somers was everything you'd want in a collegiate athlete.

Hailey Somers hails from Regina Saskatchewan, playing in her fifth-year of eligibility and finishing a diploma in Business Administration at Lakeland College. She had previously completed her Bachelor of Science.
