The Queens win their fourth in a row, Ooks end their season with a loss

Red Deer, February 10, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens make it four in a row with a commanding three-set sweep over the NAIT Ooks on Friday night.

It was a very slow start for the Queens as they fell behind early with an Ooks team coming out of the gate very fast. But with some great serving from setter Dani Wiens (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology), the Queens found themselves on the right side of a run, giving them a three-point lead as they entered an Ooks timeout. The amazing serves from RDP continued into their next rotation as outside-hitter Lauren Junck (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) scored a few aces for her team. Moments later, Ooks libero Haley Sowell (Lab & X-Ray Technician) saved her team with a desperation return and NAIT would later get the point after a double block on the outside. It was a long rally on the second set point of the game, but with a kill going out of bounds, the Queens took the first set 25-22.

Wiens continued her excellent serving in the second set with some help from her teammates as she was able to serve multiple points in a row to get the Queens back into it after another slow start. A couple of key timeouts called by the Ooks caused their team to get back into the set and they managed to pull within three points of the Queens late in the second. But after a timeout of their own, RDP pulled away to take the set 25-22. Outside-hitter Vanessa Loos (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) clinched the set for her team with her third kill of the match.

It was a close set to start out once again but when it was Wiens' turn to serve, the Queens managed to pull away to increase their lead to three points causing the Ooks to call a timeout. The serving excellence continued as right-side Sydney Rix (Bachelor of Education) helped her team pull ahead late in the third set with multiple serves in a row. The Queens would win it in three straight sets with a final score of 25-15.

The Ooks player of the game went to their libero Haley Sowell with nine digs on the night and an incredible desperation save for her team in the first set. For the hometown Queens, it was a local native winning the honour in Lauren Junck with eight kills and two digs.

The Queens will play in their final regular season tomorrow at 1 pm against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves and the regular season is over for the Ooks.
