Women's Volleyball Huskies start season with straight-sets win over Wolves

It wasn't a perfect win technically, but it was a perfect start on the scoresheet to the 2022-23 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Regular Season as the Keyano Huskies Women's Volleyball team earned a straight-sets victory (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) against the visiting Northwest Polytechnic Wolves.

"It was good; it was a little rusty," Head Coach Hayden Nichol said after earning his first-ever ACAC regular season coaching win. "We looked like we had a bit of nerves and first regular season match of the year, that's going to happen.

"[Saturday] we're looking at being more of a team that we want to play."

Megan Polant racked up 10 kills while Karlene Kaminski had eight, including the opening kill of the season for her side. The Huskies took advantage in all three sets of a Wolves team that committed 21 errors as well as 14 service errors.

Katie Nashim led her side with eight kills while Gabrielle Capelle led the visiting Wolves with 12 digs.

Making the start in her ACAC debut, Sofia Janzen had a pair of blocks for the Huskies, marking a solid debut and praise from her coach.

"We brought her in for this exact reason," Nichol said. "She's committed, she gets the job done and what a fantastic blocker.

"It's tough for a first year to come in and first regular season match make her first start and she did an amazing job."

Tyneille Neufeld led the way in the blocks department with four of her own. The Wolves countered with two blocks in the contest as Sierra LaValley and Gracie Smith each picked up a single block.

Nashim and Polant each earned Player of the Game honours for their respective sides.

The two clubs return to the SSWC to battle Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
