Lions Extend Win Streak to Four Against Broncos

Now having won 5 of their last 6 games, the Lions move to 13-7 after two 3-1 victories over the Olds Broncos this weekend. Saturday night's game in the Lions Den was led by the efforts of first-year outside Vanessa Boone (Player of the Game with 13 kills, 3 aces, and 1 block) and sophomore leftside Megan Gleddie for the Broncos (8 kills, 5 digs, and 1 ace).

The Lions put pressure on the visitors right out of the gate, opening up a lead with tough serving and offense. Early kills from Olds rightside Karley Dieken (9 kills, 5 digs, 2 blocks) showed signs of life from the Broncos, but wasn't enough to cut the deficit to within striking distance. A kill from Willow Lewington (13 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) brought the Lions to a 20-12 lead, and from there the Lions closed out the first set 25-15.

The strong play for the Lions continued in the second set. Serving runs from Lewington, Boone, and Lions captain Ali Leskow (4 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks) once again put the home team way out in front. Unforced errors on the Olds side didn't help the visitors' efforts to stop the bleeding, and the set was brought to a close at 25-14 after another Lewington kill.

The Broncos struck back in the 3rd set, improving their blocking, serving, and attacking while the Lions struggled to put the ball away. The blocking of middle Janeen Pellatt (2 kills, 6 blocks, 4 digs) played a large part in shutting down the Lions offense, and kills from Megan Gleddie brought the Broncos to a 24-17 lead. A Leskow attack out of the middle was blocked by opposing middle Bianca Pollock (3 digs, 2 blocks) to end the set 25-17.

The final set began with a battle, as the teams kept it close until Ambrose went on an 8-2 run to put themselves up 18-11. The lead proved too much to overcome, as the Lions were up 23-19 before a kill and block from Makayla Beisal (10 kills, 7 digs, 2 blocks) finished the game.

Next weekend the Lions take on the 6th place Lethbridge Kodiaks. Games will be at 6:00 pm, in Lethbridge on Thursday, January 31st, and in the Lions Den on Saturday, February 2nd.
