WVB | Kodiaks jump into third with win over Olds

Feb. 17, 2018 – Their playoff spot was already secure, but there was still much on the line in the Kodiaks final regular season game of the season.

Looking to improve their playoff positioning and avoid a matchup with the North Division's number one seed, the Kodiaks women's volleyball team took care of business with a straight sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-14) win over the Olds Broncos at the Val Matteotti Gym on Saturday.

Combined with an Ambrose loss to Briercrest earlier in the day, the Kodiaks officially leapfrogged the Lions into third place and will face the north division's second seeded The King's University Eagles in their ACAC quarter-final match.

Lethbridge was ready right from the start, getting huge contributions from all corners of their lineup. They claimed set one 25-15 on the strength of five kills from Taya Mikado and jumped out to a 12-6 lead in set two, but Olds' scrappy defence kept them in the contest. The Broncos were able to close the gap to 17-15 before an extended service run from Kristine Ward helped the Kodiaks regain control and close out the set 25-17.

Lethbridge then cruised in set three, displaying all around solid play while building a 14-8 lead. They then claimed eight of the next thirteen points to help them eventually take the third set 25-14 and close the match. Mack Lewicki had three digs and a pair of kills, along with two aces in the set.

Overall the Kodiaks were led by Kristine Ward's 11 kills, while Mikado finished with ten kills total. Madison Yanish was named player of the game for her performance at setter, making smart decisions while picking up 26 assists.

Olds (0-24) will now head home and enter the offseason, while the Kodiaks will now prepare for next week's conference championship tournament in Camrose, hosted by University of Alberta – Augustana.

The Kodiaks will arrive in Camrose on Wednesday before taking to the court on Thursday for their single-elimination first round matchup.
