WVB | Clippers clip Kodiaks in five

WVB | Clippers clip Kodiaks in five

Feb. 2, 2018 – Facing the fifth ranked team in the nation, the Kodiaks nearly made the comeback of the season.

After dropping the first two sets, Lethbridge showed tremendous heart in forcing a fifth and deciding final set. In the end Briercrest was able to recover and used a 15-12 set five to claim the match.

The game also featured a milestone moment for Briercrest's Sam Zacharias. She claimed her tenth of a game high 17 kills in set three, which set the all-time ACAC regular season kills record of 1329.

Briercrest caught the Kodiaks slow footed early, racing out to an early six-point lead and hanging on for a 25-21 win.

The second set followed the same script, with the Kodiaks getting down early. Briercrest claimed nine of the last 13 points in the set for a 25-15 win.

With their backs against the wall, the Kodiaks refused to quit and managed to give Briercrest a scare. The Kodiaks claimed set three 25-22, then stormed to 25-18 win in set four.

The Kodiaks couldn't keep the momentum going into the fifth set, however, falling down 10-5 early. Lethbridge closed the lead to 14-12 but simply ran out of time.

The Clippers were led by Zacharius, whose game high 17 kills and 11 digs earned her player of the game honours. Becky Garner had 13 kills and Kristy Kindrachuk had 18 digs.

The small yet mighty Megan Szott was named the Kodiaks player of the game, putting home 7 kills and eight digs. Kristine Ward once again led the team in kills with 14.

The teams will be right back at it tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the rematch at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
