WVB | Kodiaks Go 1-1 in the Weekend

October 28, 2017 – The Kodiaks and Queens faced off today in the final game of their weekend series in Lethbridge. Coming off a big win in five sets the night before, the Kodiaks looked to add another point in the win column.

The Queens came out strong, ready for revenge from the previous game but the Kodiaks held tight with them to keep the first half of the set close. Queens captain, Miranda Dawe led the set with six kills, followed closely by Naomi Jardine with five kills of her own, exposing some cracks in the Kodiaks defense and guiding the Queens as they pulled ahead midway through the set to win 25-16.

Rattled from the previous set, the Kodiaks had a shaky start to the second set and the Queens capitalized on the opportunity. McKenna Barthel controlled the net for the Queens with four kills, while Kaylee Domoney set the tone defensively with seven digs. The Queens took the second set 25-13 and advanced to a 2-0 lead in the game.

Determined not to give in to the Queens, the Kodiaks came out fighting in the third set, but Red Deer stole an early lead. After a big block from Jamie Brown the Kodiaks rallied their way back into the game. Taya Mikado showed off her abilities at the net with three kills and two major blocks, giving the Kodiaks their footing to take the set 28-26.

Ready to take the Queens to a fifth set, the Kodiaks came out swinging but the Queens made them work for it, holding the Kodiaks to a point for point set. Queens pulled ahead in the final points led by Miranda Dawe with seven kills in the set to win 25-21 and take the game 3-1.

With this game the Kodiaks and Queens records tie at 4-2 in the season. Kodiaks are back in action November 3rd and 4th as they play a weekend series in Olds.
