Lions Lose In Three To Trojans

After a four-set loss to SAIT on Friday night, the Ambrose Women's Volleyball team was hoping to steal a win from the 14-5 Trojans in their continued pursuit of a playoff spot. Unfortunately, the Lions were unable to crack the defensive armor of the Trojans in the Lions' Den and lost in three sets. Head Coach Colin Kubinec chalked the loss up to a lack of long-term consistency on the Lions' part: "We show moments of higher execution, but so far haven't been able to do it consistently."

The teams traded leads throughout the first set and kept the score very close. An overpass kill by Shae Mendes made it 20-17 for the Lions near the end of the first set, but the Trojans stormed back with clutch blocking to take a 24-22 lead. A missed serve from SAIT setter Veronica Headley brought the Lions within one before a kill from Megan Brennan won the very close set for the Trojans 25-23.

The Lions started the second set well and took an early 4-0 lead. A kill from Brennan sent Trojans middle Samantha Overwater back to the service line, who would then go on an unprecedented 17-point serving run that included 6 aces. When the smoke cleared and Overwater finally missed a serve, it was 18-5 for the visitors. Several substitutions for the Lions, including Maddi Richter, Somer Bartel, and eventual POG Rivver Flewell, brought energy and momentum back to their side of the court with a small push late in the set. Although losing the set 25-16, that momentum carried on into the third and final set.

The third set was much like the first, neither team giving the other a sizeable lead until a service ace by Julia Kemper made it 16-13 for the Lions. The Trojans, on the back of relentless defense, made up the three-point difference and took the lead at 24-20. In a fitting end to the match, Samantha Overwater served her seventh and final ace of the night to secure the three-set victory for her team. "Specific rotations definitely caused us some grief tonight…we've gotta find ways to score in every rotation and side out when we need to," said Kubinec.

Next weekend the Lions will host the Briercrest Clippers, currently ranked #1 the in ACAC South and #3 in the nation. On Friday night the women will play at 6:00 pm, and on Saturday afternoon will rematch at 1:00 pm. All games will be streamed on acactv.ca. Go Lions!
