Lions Lose 5 Set Thriller to Queens

The Ambrose Women's Volleyball team proved they could compete with anyone in the league as they came just short of defeating the visiting Red Deer Queens on Friday night. Head Coach Colin Kubinec was disappointed with the loss, but optimistic about Saturday's upcoming match: "I wish we hadn't let that one slip away, but we're gonna take the positives out of the game and take these opportunities to improve, back to the drawing board for tomorrow."

The Queens dominated the first set, as McKenna Barthel put up several huge blocks that made it difficult for the Lions to find any sort of offensive rhythm. Two of the final three points of the set were stuff blocks, before a right side swing from Barthel finished the set at 25-16.

In the second set, Ambrose began to play more comfortably and eventually pulled away with a 17-10 lead. Julia Kemper and Ashleigh McKinnon both put up big numbers on the kill column, while Lions libero Brooklyn Dyck racked up digs and kept her team alive in several long rallies. Red Deer fought back and tied it up at 20-20, but the Lions kept their composure and won 25-23.

The third set was another Lions win, this time 25-20, both teams keeping it close with amazing defense right up until the final points. The Lions pulled away thanks to a few spectacular one-armed digs, and a hitting error from Miranda Dawe gave Ambrose the set.

Red Deer came back to life in the fourth set, and a late push by the Lions after being down 11-19 wasn't enough to win, as the Queens won 25-22 and sent the game to a fifth set. Despite starting strong and at one point leading 9-8, Ambrose's block was unable to stop Red Deer's middles down the stretch and the home team fell 15-10 after five gruelling sets.

Ambrose P.O.G. Brooklyn Dyck, with 29 digs on the night, is hoping her team will avoid mental lapses in Red Deer tomorrow night. "We're going to try and start right from the get-go, cleaning up our game a little bit and playing hard from the beginning."

Tonight's win puts the Queens at 12-3, and the Lions at 6-9. If you can't make it to RDC on Saturday, be sure to catch the action live at acactv.ca! Go Lions!
