HUSKIES TAKE BITE OUT OF VOYAGEURS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
LAC LA BICHE – The scoreboard read 9-1 Keyano. The standings showed the Portage College Voyageurs at zero for the season. And yet, when the final whistle sounded, the players and their head coach were smiling – not because they weren't hoping for better results, but because they showed improvement throughout a very tough season.
In only their third season in the ACAC – and only the second full one after the pandemic scrapped one season entirely and shortened another – the Voyageurs showed a marked improvement over the previous year, even while they battled through injuries and an experience gap.
"I'd say the season was a success, especially because of the fact that a lot of them didn't have experience," said Head Coach Kika Mukuninwa after the loss to the Huskies at the Bold Center Soccer Field. "We were playing through injuries, of course, and then some couldn't play at all because of injury. But especially this last game you saw the fight in the second half and it was kind of embodies the entire season for them where they get down but they never give up."
Indeed. Down 6-0 at half, the Voyageurs played a much more competitive final 45 minutes, holding the Huskies to three goals and potting one of their own. Sabrina Lera and Marissa Mestre led the way for Keyano with two goals apiece. Julia Shebib played a strong second half and was named Player of the Game for the Huskies. Hailee George netted the Voyageurs' lone tally and was named Player of the Game for her squad.
While the Huskies now head to the playoffs, the Voyageurs' season is over – at least until Futsal starts in the winter semester. Prior to the game, the Voyageurs honoured five graduating players who will not be back on the team next year: Aryka Bouvier, Jayden Draney, Sarah Jones, Lexis Roy and Ashley Tweedy.
Mukuninwa and the team then posed for a picture and celebrated the end of a challenging but sometimes rewarding season.
"You saw the energy after the game because they felt like winners and they truly put in the work and they had fun," he said. "It was a fun season for them."
