Voyageurs Succumb to Relentless Wolves' Attack

LAC LA BICHE – This time, there was no silver lining, no sugar coating, no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Less than 24 hours after one of their best efforts of the season, the Portage College Voyageurs' Women's Soccer Team laid a bit of an egg, in a 12-1 drubbing at the hands of the visiting Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves at the Bold Center Soccer Field.

A day after they played a spirited affair and potted four goals, the Voyageurs played a listless first half and were down 3-0 before the game was 15 minutes old. Head Coach Kika Mukuninwa noted fatigue and injuries couldn't be used as an excuse, since their opponents were in the same boat.

"I think they just never worked and it's a bit of an indictment because the other team was in the same spot as us," he said.  "It was noticeable in the first half. In the second half, we scored right away, we competed, so nothing changed. It was just a mentality."

Medea Chiba matched her four-goal output from 24 hours earlier to lead the Wolves, with Jess Kurek adding two and Player of the Game Tristan Woodroft adding a goal and an assist. Robyn Thomas tallied the lone marker for Portage. Chloe Gauthier-Schaub played a spirited game and was named Player of the Game for the Voyageurs.

As they prepare for their next game, a road affair versus NAIT next Saturday, Mukuninwa is hopeful that his players will focus on the good they did on Saturday and throw Sunday's game on the trash heap.

"We'll be using this week to get people recovered and get people back into the right state of mind," he said. "It definitely wasn't our best effort today but Saturday is a good indication of what we can do when are minds are in it."
