Thunder Down Huskies in Tight Match to Advance to North Finals

Edmonton, AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder hosted the Keyano Huskies in ACAC North Division Semi-Final action Sunday morning. After scoring an early goal, the Thunder defensive play carried the team until they managed to seal the game with a second goal late in the second half to give them a 2-0 win.

Living up to the hype of a playoff game, the game started with tight, intense back and forth action. The Thunder were able to strike first in the 15' as #6 Vanessa Pietramala sent a shot towards goal that found the back of the net to give CUE a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the first half was a defensive battle as the ball stayed in the midfield with both team's back lines standing strong. The second half picked up where the first half ended as both teams played strong defensive games. With time running out on the second half, CUE's #10 Bre Callander sent a shot towards the net from distance that snuck into the top corner above the Huskies' keepers gloves to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead in the 83'. Althought the Huskies pushed late, they weren't able to solve the Thunder backline or CUE keeper Monica Dickson as the Thunder secured the clean sheet and the 2-0 win. The One Team Sports players of the game were #11 Amber Deep for the Keyano Huskies and #8 Audrey French for the Concordia Thunder.

After the game, Thunder head coach Frank Imbrogno was thrilled with what he saw from his team: "our players stepped up and played a composed and patient game both in possession and out of possession – and were also able to match the physical intensity of the opposition. A brilliant game by the Thunder." Fourth year Thunder forward Becky Leavell added to her coach's praise of the team: "today's game was professional. All of our players stepped up and played with composure and patience. We're excited and ready for our next match."

The Thunder continue their pursuit of an ACAC Conference Championship next Saturday when they meet the NAIT Ooks in the North Division Final.
