The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder wrapped up their weekend doubleheader as they hosted the Portage College Voyageurs Saturday afternoon. The Thunder scored early and never looked back as they went on to a 15-0 win.
The Thunder came flying out of the gate scoring three goals in the first six minutes - two for #3 Sara Cormier and another from graduating forward Sarah McClelland playing in her final home game for the Thunder. The Thunder maintained control for the rest of the first half without hesitation as they went into the half with an 8-0. The second half was again all Thunder as they scored early in the period and didn't look back, adding to their lead and going on to win 15-0. Cormier and McClelland set the pace for the Thunder each registering two goals and two assists as 10 different Thunder players found the back of the net. In the second half, Thunder forward Rebecca Leavell scored her second goal of the game, setting a new record for the women's soccer program in career goals scored. The One Team Sports Players of the Game were #14 Rebecca Leavell for Concordia and #17 Hannah Cousins for Portage.
After the game, Thunder head coach Franco Imbrogno commented: "today, as a group, our game plan was matched with our execution on the field. As a group, we all worked on the key elements of the game necessary to have success." After a one goal and one assist performance, second year Thunder midfielder Brooke Lesoway added: "we were able to build from the back and find success in front of the net."
The Thunder wrap up their regular season and continue their playoff push when they travel to the Lakeland College Rustlers on October 11 for a holiday Monday matinee.
