Broncos captain helps clinch playoff position with win over Ambrose

Led be team captain and defender Katharina Oeltermann's three goals, Olds College Broncos women's soccer team defeated the Ambrose University Lions 4-0 Saturday, Oct. 19 at Richardson Pioneer Field. This clinched a playoff position for the Olds Broncos women's soccer team with one game remaining in the season. If the women get a win or tie against SAIT tomorrow they clinch second in the ACAC South heading into the playoffs.

The Broncos had the first opportunity of the game when Felicia Rodney shot the ball high on Ambrose goalie Janelle Reimer.

Kathleen Andres was making her first start in goal as she was normally a starting midfielder. Andres was not tested until the 10 minute mark, but Ambrose was offside.

Paige Whitehead had a great lead pass that was just out of reach of the streaking Broncos forward at the 19 minute mark. Minutes later she had a great free kick that sailed just high of the Lions net.

At the 35 minute mark, Jayna Espie-Sanderson had a corner kick and Katharina Oeltermann headed the ball past Reimer to put the Broncos up 1-0. A minute later there was a scramble in front of the net and Reimer made a brilliant save to keep the score at 1-0.

Ambrose had a great chance 29 minutes into the game but sailed the ball over the net.

Shots at halftime were 15-5 for Olds with shots on goal 7-3 for the Broncos, and Olds having the only corner kicks with three.

At the 64 minutes Kate Campbell took the ball from a scramble at half and sent Hailey Pettersen in on goal. Pettersen chipped the ball over Reimer and into the net to bring the Broncos up 2-0.

At the 75th minute Paige Whitehead broke up an Ambrose rush at midfield and Katharina Oeltermann took a shot from outside the box that went over top of Reimer to make the score 3-0 for the Broncos.

Paige Whitehead had a great header at the 84th minute that Oeltermann was able to head over Reimer and into the net to make the score 4-0.

Player of the game for Ambrose was Beth Herman and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Emma Hatcher.

Shots were 36-10 for the Broncos with Olds goalie Kathleen Andres making six saves for the blank sheet while Ambrose's Janelle Reimer made 13.Olds had five corner kicks.
