WSOC | Kodiaks use late goal to tame Lions

October 6, 2018 – The Kodiaks used a late goal from Tansy Nicol to fend off a desperate Lions comeback and seal an important 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

In the first ever meeting between the two sides, the Kodiaks dominated the possession in the first half, opening the scoring in the tenth minute with a goal from Sydney Hope. Hanna Luskey curled a beautiful ball in off a corner kick where Allie Morrison dummied the ball, fooling the Ambrose defender, leaving Sydney loose in front to pop it in the corner.

Lethbridge sent many through balls in for their attackers but couldn't quite close out the extra opportunities, which nearly came through to cost them late.

Ambrose came back fighting in the second half, with Meg Buchanan finally breaking through to tie the game at one.

Desperate for three points, the Kodiaks quickly went back on the offensive and finally broke through in the 88th minute with a nice chip shot goal from Tansy Nicol.

Aimee Santagelo then worked her magic in extra time to give the Kodiaks insurance. She sent in a beautiful cross kick from the right wing which snuck past Ambrose keeper Janelle Perry. The loose ball found the foot of Vicki Noronha, who put it home to seal the victory.

The win gives the Kodiaks a record of 4-3-1, moving them into a tie for third place in the ACAC south division standings. The Lions fall to 2-4-1. The Kodiaks are back in action tomorrow to host rival Medicine Hat Rattlers to close out the Thanksgiving weekend.
