First ever ACAC Women's Soccer Home Opener sees Lions hold their own

It was a historic event at Rundle College as the Women's Soccer program hosted the Red Deer Queens for thier first ever home opener in program history.   Although a chilly evening, the Lions were supported with a large fan base coming out to support this new program including alumni for the CBC and NBC who were honered between the Mens and Womens game.   It took a while for the Lions to shake their nerves and find their legs as within the first half, the RDC Queens had more control and possession of the ball.  In the first half, the RDC Queens took 4 shots, while the Ambrose Lions only got 1 shot off.  While RDC controlled time of possession in the first half, the Lions defense was strong as at the half there was yet to be a goal scored. Kicking off after half was the RDC Queens who, once again, had more control of the ball.  The Queens were able to break though in the 69th minute of play.  The first goal of the game was scored by #11, Kayla Yeo, on the RDC Queens. In the 73rd minute of the game player #18, Mackenzie Lobb, from the Ambrose Lions played great defense through blocking a shot at the goal and clearing the ball off of the goal line keeping the Lions within striking distance. At 86 minute Ambrose Lions player Kate Stacey and Bethany Herman combined for a great chance off of a set play however were unable to convert. There were numerous great saves from the Ambrose Lions goalie, Karina Kurtzweg, especially in the 88th minute blocking a shot from RDC Queens player #4, Natasha Saleem.  Athough not the result they were hoping for in their first ever home game, losing 1-0 to the Queens, there was still an excitment in the air as the Lions showed great promise and improvment already in their first ever season!  The Player of the Game for the Ambrose Lions was player #15, Kara Friesen and for the Queens was #3, Rebecca McBride.
