Trojans take home gold with win over Ooks

Lloydminster, AB - The 2025 ACAC Women's Futsal Championship Match featured the top teams from the North and South divisions, the NAIT Ooks and the SAIT Trojans. The Ooks entered the playoffs with a 9-1 record, whereas the Trojans were undefeated at 10-0. SAIT were notably an offensive powerhouse throughout the playoffs, however, NAIT's defence shone throughout their previous games.

Fans of both teams filled up the stands in the Lakeland College Gymnasium, setting the scene for an electric final. Both teams exhibited precision and accuracy from the beginning, conveying a high-caliber game. Tiona Paton, a fourth-year from Edmonton, opened the scoring for the Trojans at 21:02. Jyla Micael-Erandio continued to showcase her offensive abilities, but the Trojans' defence remained solid and shut down any advances. Erin Mergen, goalkeeper for the Trojans, was crucial in their success to keep the Ooks off the board. Despite SAIT's early offensive successes, NAIT maintained control of the game and kept the ball in the Trojans' end. However, nearing the end of the half, SAIT turned the intensity on again and netted their second goal of the game from second-year Sofia Pena.

The second half opened with various scoring chances for the Trojans, but they failed to capitalize early, including a chance on a nearly wide-open net. The game remained high-intensity, with both fan sections highly engaged throughout the game. NAIT was able to get on the scoreboard with a goal from North First-Team All-Conference player Alise Rahime, who netted one from a narrow angle off of SAIT's defender. Despite efforts by the Ooks to push in the final minutes, including putting in Sasha Pietramala as a flying goalkeeper, the Trojans' dominance proved too hefty to overcome. SAIT earned the 2025 ACAC Women's Futsal Championship with a 2-1 victory. This marks SAIT's second consecutive ACAC Futsal title.

Tiona Paton earned Player of the Game honours for the Trojans, and Alise Rahime was given the nod for the Ooks.

Additional Tournament All-Stars were awarded to Daelin Horsfield and Jyla Michael-Erandio of the NAIT Ooks, as well as Amy Fallows and Erin Mergen from the SAIT Trojans. Fourth-year Nikki Charlton from the SAIT Trojans was crowned Tournament MVP.
